
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26th, 1926 - October 18 1999) was an American actress and performer who toured for more than 40 years. A torch-singer renowned for her gorgeous, sultry contralto voice, London recorded over thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 until 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her performance of "Cry Me a River" the track that she first performed in her debut album. London was also nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award for her character in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse in the show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was as an actress when she worked as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year acting career started with film in 1944 which included roles for female leads in numerous westerns. She starred along with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) along with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) along with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and alongside Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-1950s she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional career. In 1969 she released her last studio album. However she was prominent in the emergency show as Dixie McCall, a female nurse. (1972-1979) in which she co-starred alongside Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
